Chapter 20

JON

I couldn’t take my eyes off either of them.

I looked across the table at Alena, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips. The warm glow of the room filled with the aroma of delicious food, creating a cozy atmosphere that matched the company I was in. Alena's presence was captivating, her laughter infectious, and Millie's adorable antics added an extra layer of joy to the evening.

We savored each bite of the scrumptious lasagna and indulged in the flavorful salads. The conversation flowed effortlessly, as if we had known each other for years. Alena's wit and intelligence intrigued me, while Millie's innocent laughter melted my heart.

Speaking of Millie, she was an absolute delight. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and she couldn't contain her excitement over the little whale toy I had given her. She affectionately named it "Whale" and carried it everywhere, a constant companion by her side throughout the evening.

“Now, be careful with him,” Alena said.

Millie didn’t pay her any heed, instead focusing on moving Whale through the air, making cute little whooshing noises as if she were steering the plush creature through the water.

But as fate would have it, her play took an unexpected turn. Millie's tiny hands, covered in sauce from her meal, accidentally left their mark on her beloved Whale. A momentary pause filled the air as she stared at the sauce-stained toy, her eyes welling up with tears.

“Oh no,” Alena said. “She hates it when her stuff gets dirty.”

The sight of Millie crying her eyes out stirred a protective instinct in me that I didn’t know I had.

“Aw, it’s alright, kiddo,” I said. “Just a little sauce.”

Alena reached out to comfort Millie, but I couldn't bear to see the disappointment in her eyes. So, with a genuine desire to help, a solution came to mind.

"Hey, Millie, how about we give Whale a little bath? We can make sure he's squeaky clean again."

Millie's tears instantly transformed into a glimmer of excitement. She nodded enthusiastically, her trust in me evident in her wide-eyed gaze. Alena smiled gratefully, appreciating my effort to turn a potentially upsetting moment into a fun adventure.

“Bath!” Millie said, though it came out more like bass.

“She loves baths,” Alena said. “She could sit in one all night.”

“Well, that sounds perfect to me. How about we give Whale a little bath, then we get ready for bed?”

Concern knitted Alena’s brow. “You sure? You barely had a chance to touch your food.”

“It’ll be here when I get back,” I replied. “Got more important things to take care of.” I picked up Whale as I spoke, giving it a little wiggle and letting her know just what those important things were.

“Thanks,” she replied with a laugh. “Seriously.”

Together, we gathered the necessary supplies—a small basin, warm soapy water, and a soft cloth. Millie clutched Whale tightly as we made our way to the bathroom, her steps filled with anticipation.

As we carefully dipped Whale into the sudsy water, Millie's face lit up with pure delight. Gently scrubbing away the sauce stains, we shared laughter, turning a simple task into a joyful bonding experience.
